Abiding and Belonging

March 3, 2019 Speaker: Lee Davis Series: 1 John

Scripture: 1 John 2:28– 3:3

“Abiding and Belonging”

I John 2:28-3:3

1. In light of Jesus’ sure return, we must hold fast to Him in faith and obedience (2:28-29).
A. John 14-16
B. John 1:9-13
C. John 3:1-15
D. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
1. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. - II Corinthians 5:6–10(ESV)
E. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw - each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.
1. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. - I Corinthians 3:12-15(ESV)

2. Because of our privileged adoption, we have hope now and for eternity (3:1-2).
A. Ephesians 1:3-14
B. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs - heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. - Romans 8:14–17(ESV)
C. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. - Galatians 4:4–7(ESV)
D. So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. - Galatians 4:4–7(ESV)
E. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. - I Corinthians 13:12(ESV)

3. In keeping with the purpose of our redemption, we must wait for Him with hope and devotion (3:3).
A. Matthew 25:1-30
B. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. - Hebrews 10:36-39(ESV)
C. Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things - things that belong to salvation. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. - Hebrews 6:9-12(ESV)
