May 19, 2019 Speaker: Lee Davis Series: 1 John

Scripture: 1 John 5:6–12

The Good News of Eternal Life
I John 5:6-12

1. Our faith in Christ is grounded in truth (vss. 6-8).

A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses shall a charge be established. - Deuteronomy 19:15 (ESV)

Matthew 3:13-17

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’” - John 1:29–30 (ESV)

And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” - Mark 15:37–39 (ESV)

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.” - John 15:26–27 (ESV)

2. Christ is the source and giver of eternal life (vss. 9-12).

John 3:13-21

3. What Does It Mean to Have Eternal Life?

A. Our spiritual hunger and thirst is satisfied.

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” - John 4:13–14 (ESV)

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” - John 6:35 (ESV)

B. We will be raised up on the last day and will live forever.

“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” - John 6:40 (ESV)

C. We have the light of life and don’t stumble around in the darkness.

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12 (ESV)

D. We have abundant life.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” - John 10:10 (ESV)

E. We have intimate fellowship with the Father and Son.

“And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” - John 17:3 (ESV)

F. Even if we die, we will live forever.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” - John 11:25–26a (ESV)

G. We believe that Jesus is the Christ.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. - I John 5:1a (ESV)

H. We fight sin and pursue righteousness.

If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him. - I John 2:29 (ESV)

No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. - I John 3:9 (ESV)

I. We overcome the world.

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith. - I John 5:4 (ESV)

J. We love each other.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. - I John 4:7 (ESV)
