Never Alone

Scripture: Psalm 139:1–24

Never Alone

Psalm 139

Three Promises

1.  The Lord knows us intimately and isn’t put off by our inner struggles (vss. 1-6).

2.  The Lord is with us even when all that we sense tells us otherwise (vss. 7-12).

For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.  - Romans 8:22–23 (ESV)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  - Psalm 23:4 (ESV)

3.  The Lord has always and will forever remain lovingly in control of our days (vss.13-16).

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” - Matthew 6:25–27(ESV)

Two Responses

1.  Lord, please comfort and give us hope (vss.17-18).

2.  Lord, please vindicate and preserve us (vss 19-24).

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.  - Psalm 23:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 5–6(ESV) - Romans 8:35–39(ESV)
