The Conflict of Desire
I John 2:15-17
1. We must be on guard against nurturing misplaced desires for worldly things.
A. God rescued us for his glory.
1. “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” - Matthew 6:24(ESV)
2. “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” - James 4:4(ESV)
3. John 17
a. Jesus does not advocate fearful isolationism, but missional engagement marked by holiness.
4. I Peter 1-2
B. God rescued us that we might have eternal satisfaction in Him.
1. Westminster Catechism
a. Question 1
1. Q - What is the chief and highest end of man?
2. A - Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God and fully to enjoy Him forever (by enjoying Him forever).
2. Jeremiah 2
3. “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” - Psalm 16:11(ESV)
4. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.” - Proverbs 14:27(ESV)
5. “At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.” - I John 2:8(ESV)
6. Hebrews 11
7. “For the present form of this world is passing away.” - I Corinthians 7:31b(ESV)
8. So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” - II Corinthians 4:16-18(ESV)
